The church of Smyrna was faced with tremendous persecution, pressure, and difficulty. Christ’s word to them is not that He will remove persecution, but that He knows what they were going through and encouraged them to remain faithful even to the point of death, because He was accomplishing His work in and through them. For that they would be greatly rewarded.
