09/22/2024 – Galatians Bible Study – Tim Brown -Paul’s list of the works of the flesh can be broken down to four general categories:(1) sensual passions, (2) unlawful dealings in things spiritual, (3) violations of brotherly love, (4) intemperate excesses. After lisitng the works of the flesh which are evident to all those observing, Paul concludes with “and things like these” indicating that his list of deeds of the flesh is only representative and not exhaustive. He then says “I warn you, as I warned you before those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Luther says: This is a hard saying, but very necessary for those false Christians and hypocrites who speak much about the Gospel, about faith, and the Spirit, yet live after the flesh. But this hard sentence is directed chiefly at the heretics who are large with their own self-importance, that they may be frightened into taking up the fight of the Spirit against the flesh.
