The Jews of Paul’s time assumed that they were God’s people simply because of their history & spiritual privileges. Similarly, we can assume that we are God’s people because of our background, our church, our nationality, etc. Paul makes it clear that it has always been the case that it is God’s saving mercy that makes a people for Himself out of those who are, by nature, not His people. How can we be sure we are God’s people?
